The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Director, Athletic Communications. Under the supervision of the Director of Athletic Communications, the Assistant Director will develop and write press releases about the coaches and athletes of assigned sports, disseminating this information to the media and public via the UCLA Athletics website and social media channels. The role involves compiling notes and statistics, overseeing social media posts, maintaining and updating the sports’ website, writing coach and athlete biographies, updating digital information guides, pitching stories to the media, and acting as an on-the-record spokesperson and liaison between coaches, athletes, and the media.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and write news and feature press releases about assigned sports.
- Disseminate information to media and public via UCLA Athletics website and social media channels.
- Compile notes and statistics for assigned sports.
- Oversee social media posts for assigned teams.
- Maintain and update the sports’ website.
- Write and update coach and athlete biographies.
- Update and digitally publish information guides.
- Pitch stories to media.
- Act as an on-the-record spokesperson and liaison between coaches, athletes, and media.
- Staff home events and oversee press operations for assigned sports and other home athletic events as needed.
- Travel with assigned teams when appropriate, reporting event results to media and assisting media covering the events.
Qualifications:
- Prior Athletic Communications experience at the university or college level is required.
- Ability to quickly and efficiently use the Internet, social media sites, and applications.
- Skill in operating a basic computer statistical system, including typing skills to quickly and accurately prepare materials on various media platforms.
- Skill in proofreading copy and printed materials, with the ability to edit for spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills (written, phone, and in-person), including public speaking.
- Strong news judgement and knowledge of crisis communications.
- Skill in creative writing, layout design, and organized research.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments and media value, make sound decisions under pressure, and quickly shift priorities.
- Skill in working with NCAA statistics for sports and dealing with broadcast entities at events.
- Knowledge of social media tactics and ability to plan and execute PR campaigns and press conferences.
- Ability to adhere to and comply with NCAA rules and regulations.
- Skill in graphic design and photographic process, with working knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of NCAA national championship event procedures and guidelines.
