Job Summary: This position will serve as the head coach for both women's and men's Cross-Country and Track & Field teams. Responsibilities include academic support and leadership for student-athletes, coaching, scouting, scheduling, recruiting, study hall monitoring, mentoring, travel coordination, teaching sportsmanship, life skills, discipline enforcement, and program administration.
Essential Functions:
- 40%:
- Plan, organize, assign, supervise, review, and evaluate staff work.
- Manage and implement coaching strategies and practice sessions for Track & Field and Cross-Country programs in compliance with rules and regulations.
- Recruit prospective student-athletes, evaluating their academic and athletic abilities and character.
- Provide individual and group coaching and meet preparation.
- Oversee athletic development training and meet strategies.
- Promote overall student-athlete development, including academic success, character building, and team discipline.
- Support academic leadership for all college students.
- 30%:
- Ensure compliance with NJCAA, MCCCD, Region I, and ACCAC regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Plan and administer the assigned budget, monitor program expenditures, and ensure budget compliance.
- Coordinate all aspects of Cross Country and Track & Field meets, including schedules, officials, timing systems, event management, invoicing, and volunteers.
- 20%:
- Plan and implement athletic promotional programs and related fundraising efforts.
- 5%:
- Serve as a program liaison with campus representatives, community service providers, alumni, and others in promoting academics and campus/community support partnerships.
- 5%:
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree: From a regionally accredited institution in a relevant field and four (4) years of experience as an athletic coach, preferably at the college level, with recruiting experience and two (2) years of senior-level or lead experience.
- Associate’s Degree: From a regionally accredited institution in a relevant field and six (6) years of experience as an athletic coach, preferably at the college level, with recruiting experience and two (2) years of senior-level or lead experience.
- High School Diploma/GED: And eight (8) years of experience as an athletic coach, preferably at the college level, with recruiting experience and two (2) years of senior-level or lead experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Four or more years/seasons of coaching both Track & Field and Cross Country as a head or assistant coach in an educational setting.
- Experience in recruiting student-athletes.
- Knowledge of the NJCAA eligibility process and understanding of MCCCD, Region I, and ACCAC regulations.
- Experience in organizing academic retention and completion efforts for student-athletes.
- Experience in coordinating all aspects of Cross Country and Track & Field meets.
- Fundraising experience.
- College Degree.
Special Working Conditions:
- Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D Driver's License is required; employee must meet district minimum standards regarding driving: MCCCD Driving Standards
- If moving from out of state, possession of a valid State Class D Driver's License is required; employee must meet district minimum standards regarding driving: MCCCD Driving Standards
- May be required to work evening and weekend hours.
- Summer work hours vary.
- May be required to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
- May be exposed to various weather conditions.
- May be assigned to work at various Mesa Community College campus locations.
- Local, state, and out-of-state travel, including driving a multi-passenger van, is required.
