Longwood University invites applications for the position of Director of Tennis (GA205). The successful candidate will be responsible for instructing, recruiting, and/or educating student-athletes in the sport of tennis and serving as an ambassador for Longwood University. This includes informing student-athletes of their role as a Longwood Citizen Leader and the necessary rules and regulations to compete within the university, NCAA, and Big South Conference.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Leadership: Demonstrate the characteristics and qualities of a successful leader and build and sustain a winning culture.
- Coaching Knowledge and Technique: Exhibit an in-depth understanding of sports rules, game strategies, and performance principles. Plan, organize, and conduct practice sessions effectively.
- Recruiting: Scout, identify, and recommend student-athletes in a manner that encourages diversity while maintaining a competitive team.
- Fiscal Responsibility: Ensure the tennis program and its staff carry out their duties in a fiscally responsible manner, complying with NCAA regulations, Commonwealth of Virginia laws, Longwood University, and athletic department procedures.
- Academic Success of Student-Athletes: Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes and assist in ensuring their academic success, working in collaboration with Academic Services.
- Rules Compliance: Manage the tennis program in full compliance with NCAA and Big South Conference rules and regulations, Commonwealth of Virginia laws, and Longwood University and athletic department policies and procedures.
- Community and University Involvement: Perform public relations functions to positively promote Longwood athletes to the media, alumni, and community. Collaborate with University Advancement to foster donor relations and ensure successful fundraising efforts.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- A Master's Degree is preferred; a Bachelor's Degree with equivalent training and work experience in a higher education setting is required.
- Work experience at a NCAA Division I University preferred with a minimum of three to five years coaching tennis or equivalent experience at the professional level.
- Knowledgeable of camp and clinic development programs.
- Ability to schedule future games with opposing teams.
- Demonstrated skill in teaching, coaching, and mentoring others.
- Must be able to perform physical activities associated with the sport of tennis.
- Must be able to meet the university eligibility requirements to drive fleet vehicles, including passenger vans and/or mini buses.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
