Bentley University is seeking an Assistant Coach for our intercollegiate Softball program. This position is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in all aspects of running the program. The Assistant Coach will help teach and coach student-athletes in a manner that supports the quality and integrity of the program and aligns with the overall mission of Bentley University.
Essential Duties:
- Assist the Head Coach in conducting practice and game coaching in compliance with University and NCAA rules and regulations. This includes preparing effective game strategies, using proven coaching techniques, and designing and coordinating practice sessions.
- Assist with the development of student-athletes by applying innovative coaching techniques to motivate individuals to perform at their peak abilities.
- Provide appropriate leadership, direction, and supervision relevant to the academic progress and personal development of student-athletes.
- Assist in the recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified prospective student-athletes through scouting, attending tournaments, and home visits. Meet with recruits while on campus and assist with scouting and researching opposing teams.
- Help manage the administrative functions within the program, including budget, travel, equipment, and supplies.
- Adhere to all conference and NCAA rules/requirements relevant to the conduct of the intercollegiate program.
- Assist with team travel, supervision, and transportation of student-athletes.
- Support the Head Coach with video/breakdown analysis and scouting of opponents.
- Train student-athletes who may need additional time or individual coaching.
- Communicate with individuals who contact Bentley about the program and respond to inquiries via e-mail, telephone, or mail.
- Maintain positive public and alumni relations and represent Bentley professionally.
- Perform other administrative or coaching duties as requested by the Head Coach or in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- 1+ years of experience as a softball coach and/or participation in the sport.
- Valid, unrestricted United States driver’s license with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley’s insurance carrier.
- Knowledge of innovative and proven coaching strategies and techniques.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities with a commitment to developing and maintaining a positive and productive playing environment.
- Ability to mentor and lead student-athletes with a commitment to their welfare.
- Knowledge of and adherence to NCAA rules/requirements.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
- Flexibility to work and/or travel a schedule that includes evening, weekend, or limited overnight assignments.
Work Environment:
- This is a less than half-time position.
- Work involves standard office time, but more often, time is spent outside on the playing fields at practices or games.
- Significant time is also spent at traveling tournaments for recruiting purposes and in other gym/training facilities.
Physical Demand:
- Physical skill and effort are essential. Every practice involves physical effort, whether demonstrating a skill or conditioning.
