Description
Professional and Interpersonal Relations:
- Cooperate with the building principal and athletic director.
- Develop rapport with the coaching staff within the school and organize the staff effectively.
- Build positive relationships with participants, the student body, faculty, parents, community members, officials, news media, and opponents.
- Maintain appropriate conduct during practices and games.
- Attend league, conference, and WVSSAC meetings.
- Engage in activities that foster professional growth and development.
- Motivate staff and players towards achieving desired goals.
- Command respect by setting an example in appearance, manners, behavior, and language.
Coaching and Related Areas:
- Provide high-caliber and quality instruction.
- Teach fundamental skills and handle athletic injuries appropriately.
- Care for and manage equipment.
- Supervise participants and discipline the team appropriately.
- Organize and design quality practice sessions and pre-season planning.
- Supervise managers and other support personnel.
- Manage the team’s budget and follow purchasing procedures.
- Demonstrate strong game organizational skills.
- Adhere to league, conference, and WVSSAC policies.
- Devote time and energy to coaching duties and follow end-of-season procedures.
- Complete WVSSAC Training & Certification Program and participate in KCS Staff Development Training on Concussions.
Other Requirements:
Estimated costs are the responsibility of the individual and subject to change at the discretion of the service provider.
- Non-Teaching Applicants:
- Complete WVSSAC Training and Certification Program (Estimated Cost: $250.00).
- Apply for the position(s) annually.
- Submit to a Criminal Background Check (Estimated Cost: $47.25), Substance Screening Test, and Physical Examination.
- Be eligible and apply for certification as a Coach through the WV Department of Education (Estimated Cost: $35.00).
- Keep certification valid and current (Estimated Annual Cost: $35.00).
- Attend Kanawha County Schools' Orientation.
Requirements for Certified Teachers:
- New teachers hired after July 1, 2012, who apply to coach on the secondary level (grades 6-12), must complete the three-hour training session provided by Kanawha County Schools and complete the Online Concussion Awareness Course through the KCS Staff Development Site.
- The training courses will be offered throughout the year, with a course cost of $15.00.
- This requirement allows new teachers to coach from the first day of practice for each specified sport identified.
