Assistant Athletic Trainer
Description

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Assistant Athletic Trainer will administer preventive treatment and rehabilitation to physical education students and athletes engaged in various intercollegiate sports. This role ensures compliance with health and safety standards and oversees the issuance, maintenance, and replacement of athletic injury protective gear and equipment for the college athletic program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the safety and welfare of Taft College student-athletes, addressing both physical and non-physical ailments at assigned activities.
  • Provide onsite care and management of injuries and illnesses, including prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation. Exercise sound judgment in deciding when to call EMS or refer the student-athlete to a physician.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed electronic documentation of all injury and treatment encounters with student-athletes, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Attend assigned athletic contests and practices, including nontraditional games, as required by the CCCAA Constitution and Bylaws.
  • Monitor environmental conditions for the safety of student-athletes, staff, and all attendees, and make recommendations to the Athletic Director.
  • Ensure compliance with California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), Central Valley Conference (CVC), and Athletic Department rules and regulations.
  • Travel with athletic teams to select competitions as necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Perform duties under general supervision, either individually or by delegating tasks to student trainers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in physical education, athletic training, kinesiology, or a related field.
  • 1 year of athletic training experience.
  • Current, valid certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (must be obtained within 90 days of hire).
  • Eligibility to obtain a Class B driver’s license.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a related field.

  • Applied Knowledge: Proficient in assessing and managing a wide range of medical issues. Able to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals.
  • Decision-Making Skills: Ability to make independent decisions regarding assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play guidelines, in line with state licensure.
  • Attention to Detail: Thorough and meticulous in injury tracking and documentation.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Effective communicator in high-stress situations, including interactions with patients, medical professionals, staff, and families.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks independently.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within the district and with external partners.
  • Detail-oriented with a sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Working Conditions:

  • Assignment as needed to support Taft College athletics.
  • Typically a 40-hour workweek, 12 months per year.
  • May require evening, overtime, holiday, or weekend hours throughout the year.
  • Work is generally performed indoors.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sufficient vision to read documents and computer displays.
  • Adequate speech and hearing for effective communication in person and by phone.
  • Manual dexterity for handling office equipment and documents.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to bend and reach for supplies and documents.
