Assistant Athletic Trainer (Temporary)
Description
This is a temporary professional position responsible for assisting in the treatment of injuries to assigned student-athletes under the supervision of the Team Physician. The role regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment when performing work and reports to the Head Athletic Trainer.
Essential Job Functions
- Oversees the application of therapeutic modalities and treatments in the Training Room.
- Aids in the prevention of athletic injuries by administering preventative taping, purchasing and fitting special protective equipment, and maintaining safety conditions at practices and competitions.
- Designs, implements, and coordinates the rehabilitation program for players after surgery, with off-season injuries, or preventative exercise, in response to pre-season screening results.
- Administers emergency procedures to injured athletes in assigned sports during practices and games.
- Maintains records of treatments and injuries of all student-athletes seen and treated in the Training Rooms. Supervises the distribution of approved medications under the orders of the Team Physician.
- Assists in scheduling and conducting pre-season athletic physicals for all student-athletes.
- Prepares reports on injured student-athletes for the Head Coach and provides periodic progress reports on the rehabilitation of injured players.
- Makes arrangements for Training Room supplies and equipment to be transported on trips.
Non-Essential Job Functions
- Makes appointments for student-athletes to see private physicians, as necessary.
- Adheres to all applicable NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, policies, procedures, and guidelines established by the conference and the NCAA.
- Working knowledge of professional standards and regulations.
- Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.
- Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships with coaches, students, staff, and external constituents.
Physical Demands
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, health, exercise science, or a related field is required.
Required Experience and Training
- No direct experience is required.
- NATA Certification, Athletic Trainer licensure in Texas, and Instructor level certification in CPR and First Aid is required.
- Candidates without current Texas certification will be considered if certification can be obtained prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree is preferred.

Benefit and Retirement Eligibility
This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
