Assistant Baseball Coach
Description

The head coach and athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the school principal.

Supervises:
In several instances, the coach must advise, coordinate, and support a staff of school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (preferable).
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and a commitment to examining new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Serve as an appropriate role model for student-athletes through instructions and actions.

GENERAL:

  • The success of athletic programs significantly influences the community's image of the entire system. Public exposure is a considerable responsibility, and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health.
  • The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process predicaments.
  • This job description aims to provide sufficient guidance to function effectively. In cases not specifically covered, it is assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment. The position is evaluated yearly and, upon recommendation, will be renewed for the upcoming school year.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Rowan-Salisbury Schools Board of Education and responsibility for their implementation by the team’s staff of the sports program.
  • Knowledge of existing system, state, and league regulations; consistent implementation and interpretation for staff.
  • Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels. Awareness of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.

STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by assistants. Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Train and inform staff, encourage professional growth by promoting clinic attendance.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants at season's end.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  • Advise the head coach and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development and demonstration in student-athletes the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Give constant attention to a student-athlete's grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant through presence at all practices, games, and while traveling.
  • Provide training rules, schedule, calendar, and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete (and their parents) who is considered a participant.
  • Follow programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.

FINANCE, FACILITY, AND EQUIPMENT:

  • Accountable for all equipment.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorize who may enter, issue, or requisition equipment.
  • Permit athletes to be only in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment and facility used.
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.

PUBLIC RELATIONS:

  • Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program and promote the sport outside the school through news media, little league programs, or any other feasible manner.
  • Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
