Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Athletics provides educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, creating an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance, and excel both academically and athletically. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration, and students in a shared experience. The Director’s Office, the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, promotes the department’s guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit supports administrators, coaches, staff members, and student-athletes in promoting a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of the University, with statewide, national, and international recognition.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Sports Performance – Olympic Sports will assist the Assistant Athletic Director/Director of Sports Performance – Olympic Sports with all aspects of the Sports Performance program. Responsibilities include practice and competition activities, player skill development, recruiting, directing and implementing plans for daily practices and competitions, organizing and administering clinics, and overall administrative tasks within the operation of the program. The successful candidate must demonstrate integrity, leadership, and a strong commitment to motivating, teaching, counseling, and recruiting academically qualified students.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with at least 1 year of experience in relevant independent instructional or educational activities.
  • Specific minimum experience is at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • 2-5 years of coaching experience in an intercollegiate environment, preferably at a Division I level.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Good organizational, interpersonal communication, and computer skills necessary.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Prefer at least 1 year in relevant independent or educational activities.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Must be able to lift/move 25lbs or greater.
  • May be required to navigate stairs.
  • Attention to detail essential.
  • Must be able to manage a high volume, fast-paced environment.
  • May be subject to working in extreme weather conditions.
  • Travel required.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
