Assistant Football Coach/Recruiter
Description
Western New Mexico University is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Assistant Football Coach/Recruiter. This role assists the head football coach in planning, developing, and coordinating the football program to ensure compliance with all NCAA and other accrediting association’s requirements for college sports.
Duties:
- Assist the head coach with practice, home, and away competition schedules, ensuring appropriate training and academic time for student-athletes.
- Recruit prospective athletes through personal visits, telephone interviews, and mail solicitation in accordance with NCAA requirements and standards.
- Discuss personal, scholastic, and athletic goals with potential recruits, recommending financial assistance opportunities through scholarships.
- Monitor academic performance levels of student-athletes to ensure compliance with University and accrediting standards for class attendance and grades.
- Assist with fundraising events for financial and equipment contributions.
- Arrange travel, meals, lodging, and transportation for athletes within budget constraints.
- Coach students during games, reviewing strategies, strengths, and weaknesses to promote personal and team improvement.
- Perform administrative and supervisory functions, including staff recruitment, training, performance evaluation, and guidance.
- Participate in personal and professional development, maintain comprehensive communication, and model professional standards and ethics.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Background:
- Bachelor's degree and prior collegiate football experience at the Junior College level or four-year institution with 2+ years of coaching experience.
- Master’s degree with 3 years of collegiate coaching experience or 6 years of combined collegiate playing and coaching experience preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Job Knowledge:
- Knowledge of NCAA Division II and Lone Star Conference rules, standards, regulations, and requirements.
- Knowledge of coaching techniques and methods, as well as athletic scholarships and their requirements.
- Familiarity with University policies and procedures.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications.
- Ability to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy.
- Sensitivity to cultural differences within the University and community.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations):
- Work involves normal office, athletics environment, and changing sports venues.
- Strenuous physical work, heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling objects over 50 pounds.
- Requires visual acuity, clear enunciation, hearing ability, manual dexterity, and flexibility.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises.
- Variable hours, including nights and weekends, depending on sporting events and needs.
Other Requirements:
- First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within 2 months of hire.
- Valid New Mexico Driver’s License.
- Must pass a Defensive Driving Course within 2 months of hire.
Western New Mexico University is a state-funded institution. All positions are dependent on state appropriations and available funding sources.
