The Colby College Department of Athletics & Recreation seeks a dedicated and passionate Assistant Men's Rugby Coach to lead and develop the men’s rugby club. This part-time position runs from September 1, 2023, to May 30, 2024, and offers a unique opportunity to work within a dynamic and supportive environment. The Assistant Men’s Rugby Coach will be responsible for coaching, managing daily practices, planning game strategies, and guiding student-athletes both on and off the field. The role requires a strong commitment to the values of liberal arts education, along with creating a positive, inclusive, and respectful atmosphere.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide on-site coaching during games and practices, focusing on player development and team performance
- Organize and execute daily practice plans
- Coordinate team travel arrangements and logistics for both in-state and out-of-state competitions
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all student-athletes, adhering to USA Rugby rules and Colby College policies
- Foster a positive and supportive team environment
- Serve as a role model for students and maintain professional relationships with athletes, staff, and administrators
- Communicate regularly and effectively with the Director of Recreation
- Additional duties as assigned, with the possibility of responsibilities evolving as necessary
Qualifications:
- Required: High school diploma
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience
- Previous coaching or competitive experience at the collegiate level is highly desirable
- A strong commitment to the values of a liberal arts education
- Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing situations
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet Colby College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements
- Strong interpersonal skills, with excellent oral and written communication
- Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community
- Ability to travel for team practices, competitions, and scouting opportunities
Key Relationships:
This position involves significant interaction with student-athletes, their families, other coaches, and the college administration.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent activity on grass, turf, courts, and in gym facilities
- Occasional lifting (up to 50 lbs) in coaching and training situations
- Frequent travel and early morning/evening/weekend work required
