Description

The Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for Olympic Sports will manage all aspects of sport performance for assigned teams, adhering to NCAA, American Athletic Conference, University, and Departmental regulations. This role supports the philosophy, goals, and mission of both Rice University and its Intercollegiate Athletics Program. The Assistant Coach will also assist the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports with facility operations, administrative responsibilities, and other duties as assigned.

Workplace Requirements:

This is an on-site position requiring duties to be performed in-person on campus during regular office hours, mornings, nights, and weekends as needed by the team schedule. Regular travel is required. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Travel with assigned teams as needed, ensuring that responsibilities with other teams and the S&C Department are not compromised. Prior approval from the Director of Strength and Conditioning is required for travel.

Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Association
  • CPR/AED Certified
  • One (1) or more years of relevant experience in the sports performance/strength and conditioning field
  • Knowledge of NCAA legislation and compliance guidelines related to a sports program
  • Demonstrated ability to create positive, high-energy, productive working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and departmental teammates
  • Ability to foster a culture of innovative thought, lifelong learning, and continuous improvement
  • Good sportsmanship and ethical behavior
  • Highly organized, good time management, and sound judgment

Preferences:

  • Master’s Degree in a Strength and Conditioning related field
  • Two or more years of related work experience in Strength and Conditioning
  • Experience with Sports Science technology

Essential Functions:

  • Design, implement, supervise, and monitor all facets of strength and conditioning programs for assigned teams, including periodized annual plans, sport-specific resistance and conditioning programs, and individual programs
  • Conduct fitness testing, compute results, and evaluate performance
  • Collaborate with Athletic Training, Sports Nutrition, Academics, and Sport Coaches to develop protocols for training load, neuromuscular fatigue, recovery, and athlete readiness
  • Instruct proper lifting techniques and assist in spotting when necessary
  • Motivate athletes to achieve maximum potential in all areas of performance
  • Assist the Director of Olympic Sports Strength and Conditioning with assigned tasks
  • Maintain required strength & conditioning certifications and memberships, including CPR/AED
  • Anticipate safety risks, implement measures to remove them, and follow emergency medical procedures if necessary
  • Participate in special projects, committees, or other initiatives as assigned
  • Provide high-level customer service and communication
  • Adhere to industry-accepted methodologies for varsity athletic programs
  • Use technology to enhance the student-athlete and department team member experience
  • Promote a healthy, safe, equitable, and culturally diverse environment for team members and student-athletes
  • Comply with the Code of Ethics and credentialing requirements of the NSCA and other credentialing organizations and the State of Texas
  • Follow policies and procedures defined by the NCAA, American Athletic Conference USA, and Rice University’s Department of Athletics
