Assistant Track and Field Coach/Cross Country Coach
Description

The Assistant Track & Field Coach/Cross Country Coach will assist the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country in day-to-day operations of the program. Responsibilities include coaching, athlete development, recruiting, scouting, academic support, and ensuring compliance with NCAA rules.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.

Required Experience:

  • Five plus years of successful previous coaching and/or playing experience.

Primary Duties/Essential Functions:

  • Schedule practices and competitions and coordinate team travel arrangements within guidelines set forth by the department, institution, conference, and NCAA.
  • Teach and develop cross country and track & field distance runners with the basic tenets and theory of the sport and skills needed to execute successful collegiate-level performance.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country in developing the annual plan for the distance runners, beginning with the cross country early return camp and ending at the track & field national championships.
  • Aid in the physical development and organizational motivation of the team.
  • Organize and lead team and/or individual-athlete meetings involving coaching personnel.
  • Ensure student compliance with rules regarding behavior and appearance.
  • Coordinate the conditioning and training of team members in conjunction with the sports medicine team.
  • Work cooperatively with university coaches, staff, faculty, and community members.
  • Identify and evaluate prospective student-athletes who are good fits for the university both athletically and academically; communicate with PSAs and families; process official and unofficial visits while completing necessary admissions and university documents.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with local high school and club coaches.
  • Comprehend and operate by standards set forth in the NCAA and APU Manuals.
  • Ensure education and enforcement of NCAA rules as they relate to documentation and input of information in JumpForward and the NCAA Institutional Request List (IRL).
  • Coordinate discipleship and mentoring of student-athletes.
  • Attend required department meetings and NCAA rules presentations.
  • Assist in fundraising, alumni relations, community outreach, and ministry opportunities; communicate the current status of the program with alumni, friends, and supporters.
  • Supervise equipment in annual procurement, inventory, distribution, and collection.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to an evangelical Christian philosophy and lifestyle.

Skills:

  • Sufficient experience to justify coaching, recruiting, compliance, and academic support.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to a variety of personalities.
  • Knowledge and application of current thinking in areas of sport techniques and strategy, conditioning, fitness, leadership, and program management.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and minister to student-athletes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Responsible driving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and multitask in a deadline-oriented environment with accuracy and consistency.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team and work as an independent contributor.
  • Exercise good judgment and discretionary skills in determining when to act independently and when to consult management.
  • Self-starter with a positive attitude and demonstrated loyalty to the staff, program, and university.
  • In agreement with the purpose and goals of Azusa Pacific University in providing a Christian-based higher education for its students.

Physical Demands:

  • Requires repetitive motions and sitting at a computer keyboard.
  • Ability to stand for extended time.
  • Hearing and speaking on the telephone.
  • Ability to conduct business at other offices on campus.
  • Ability to bend, grasp, reach, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.

Visual Demands:

  • Reading, writing notes, and computer monitor.

Environment:

  • Office, indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, various weather and temperature conditions.

Technologies:

  • Proficient in Google Apps, Microsoft Office, Hudl, compliance software, and other sport-specific web-based and/or scoring applications.

Compensation:

  • Grade 13: $68,580 to $78,867 annual salary, reflecting what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity. APU offers a competitive benefits package.
