Qualifications:

• Valid WV teaching certification or WVDE teaching permit or substitute permit.
• High school diploma or GED.
• WVSSAC certification.

Performance Responsibilities:

Professional and Interpersonal Relations:

• Cooperates with the building principal and athletic director.
• Develops rapport with coaching staff within the school.
• Organizes and leads the coaching staff.
• Develops positive relationships with participants, student body, faculty, parents, community, officials, news media, and opponents.
• Demonstrates appropriate conduct during practices and games.
• Attends league, conference, and WVSSAC meetings.
• Participates in activities that foster growth and development.
• Motivates staff and players towards desired goals.
• Commands respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior, and language.

Coaching and Related Areas:

• Develops high-caliber and quality instruction.
• Teaches fundamental skills.
• Handles athletic injuries effectively.
• Cares for equipment.
• Supervises participants and disciplines team appropriately.
• Designs quality practice sessions and pre-season planning.
• Supervises managers and other support personnel.
• Manages budget and follows purchasing procedures.
• Initiates game organizational skills.
• Follows league, conference, and WVSSAC policies.
• Devotes time and energy to coaching duties.
• Follows end-of-season procedures.
• Completes WVSSAC Training & Certification Program and takes KCS Staff Development Training on Concussions.

Non-Teaching Applicants must:

• Complete WVSSAC Training and Certification Program. Estimated Cost: $250.00.
• Apply for position(s) annually.
• Submit to the following upon initial assignment:
  • Criminal Background Check. Estimated Cost: $47.25.
  • Substance Screening Test.
  • Physical Examination.
• Be eligible and apply for certification as a Coach through the WV Department of Education. Estimated Cost: $35.00.
• Keep certification valid and current. Estimated Annual Cost: $35.00.
• Attend Kanawha County Schools' Orientation.
