Stephen F. Austin State University is seeking a professional Athletic Trainer for Men's Basketball. This position supervises the administration of the Athletic Training Rooms and coordinates the treatment of injuries to student-athletes under the supervision of the Team Physician. The role requires the exercise of discretion and independent judgment.
Essential Job Functions:
- Oversee the application of therapeutic modalities and treatments in the Training Room.
- Aid in the prevention of athletic injuries by administering preventative taping, purchasing and fitting special protective equipment, and maintaining safety conditions at practices and competitions.
- Design, implement, and coordinate the rehabilitation program for players after surgery, with off-season injuries, or preventative exercise, in response to pre-season screening results.
- Administer emergency procedures to injured athletes during practices and games.
- Maintain records of treatments and injuries of all student-athletes seen and treated in the Training Rooms. Supervise the distribution of approved medications under the orders of the Team Physician.
- Assign and supervise graduate and student assistants assigned to the Training Rooms.
- Coordinate the scheduling and conduct of pre-season athletic physicals for all student-athletes.
- Prepare reports on injured student-athletes for the Head Coach and provide periodic progress reports on the rehabilitation of injured players.
- Make arrangements for Training Room supplies and equipment to be transported on trips.
- Conduct training sessions and supervise graduate assistants in the performance of athletic medicine activities.
Non-Essential Job Functions:
- Make appointments for student-athletes to see private physicians, as necessary.
- Remain on 24-hour call to sports-specific players for treatment and/or counseling, as assigned.
- Meet with recruits, as assigned, to tour department Training Rooms and discuss injuries and rehabilitation programs.
- Attend university, conference, NCAA, and other organizational meetings, as assigned.
- Adhere to all applicable NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations.
- Travel with teams to away games, as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, policies, procedures, and guidelines established by the conference and the NCAA.
- Working knowledge of professional standards and regulations.
- Effective communication skills in both oral and written form.
- Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.
- Ability to operate a personal computer with a general understanding of application software, and an understanding of the Internet.
- Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships with coaches, students, staff, and external constituents.
Physical Demands:
- Must meet physical requirements related to the role.
Required Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, health, exercise science, or a related field.
Required Experience and Training:
- One year of related experience is required.
- Experience in collegiate athletic training is required.
- NATA Certification, Athletic Trainer licensure in Texas, and Instructor level certification in CPR and First Aid is required. Candidates without current Texas certification will be considered if certification can be obtained prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree.

Salary Information:
- Commensurate with Experience, Salary Grade - 10.
Benefit and Retirement Eligibility:
- This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
