Athletics – High School Head Cheer Coach (Football/Basketball)
Description

To help each participating student athlete achieve the level of skill, strategy, physical training, and sportsmanship necessary to realize individual and team success. At the same time, the student athlete shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Recognized ability to be a positive role model and motivator
  • Successful coaching experience (2 years minimum) and/or experience
  • Proven ability to organize, supervise, and build a total sports program
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport
  • Established skill in the fundamental and technical aspects of the sport
  • P.R. Certification and First Aid Certification
  • Must abide by South Lake Schools Coaches Handbook and overall District athletic philosophy
  • Such alternatives to the above as the Superintendent or his/her designee may find appropriate and acceptable

Performance Responsibilities & Duties Include:

  • Develop a sense of community that accepts and celebrates the diversity of all participating student athletes
  • Understand and follow all of the rules/guidelines established by the Michigan High School Athletic Association, Inc. (MHSAA) and/or South Lake Schools
  • Uphold the Athletes Code of Conduct and conduct self in accordance with the MHSAA’s Athletic Code for Coaches
  • Behave in an exemplary manner at all times and act as a role model for student athletes and coaches
  • Enforce self-control and sportsmanlike behavior for student athletes and coaches at all times
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of student athletes at all times
  • Safeguard that no student athlete is left unsupervised or unattended during or after any practice or contest
  • Confirm with the Human Resources Department that all coaches, assistants, aides, guests, and/or volunteers (paid or unpaid) have proper clearance prior to coaching, directing, and/or supervising any members of the team
  • Follow all directives from District administrator(s)
  • Establish a positive working relationship with teaching staff to communicate needs of students experiencing academic and/or emotional difficulties
  • Teach and coach the techniques and skills needed to ensure a successful sports program
  • Organize and direct the overall sports program
  • Attend required clinics/meetings to update professional skills and to stay current with MHSAA and league rules/procedures
  • Adhere to all established District and league rules pertaining to the sport
  • Organize, schedule, and supervise tryouts (as needed), practices, scouting and/or summer camps
  • Establish a sound program of injury prevention and follow-up procedures that include parent notification and the completion of an accident report
  • Validate student athlete eligibility with the athletic director based on student registration, residency, completed physical, and roster
  • Monitor student athlete grades in the sports program regularly and consistently check academic eligibility
  • Provide the school’s principal and athletic director with an acceptable, written copy of his/her team rules prior to the beginning of the season and upon completion of any revisions/updates
  • Distribute a copy of the team rules to each student athlete, review as a team, and revise based on team feedback
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use
  • Inventory, distribute, collect, and maintain the District’s athletic equipment during the season
  • Prepare any equipment for reconditioning at the end of each season
  • Evaluate officials and submit report(s) as required by the MHSAA
  • Arrange all team transportation through the athletic department
  • Accompany team to all away contests by riding with the team on the team bus
  • Directly supervise athletes at both home and away contests
  • Properly secure the school/District facility after each practice or contest
  • Report results of all games to the media, school, and athletic director
  • Maintain positive public relations with news media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, community, students, and fans
  • Support student athlete success and participation in all District sports programs
