Description
  • Policies and Regulations: Thoroughly understand and support policies, rules, regulations, and philosophies of the administration, athletic department, school corporation, IHSAA, and the National Federation. Work constructively towards positive changes in these policies when necessary.
  • Meetings and Events: Attend relevant meetings such as rule interpretation meetings, athletic department meetings, awards banquets, scholar athlete presentations, workshops, clinics, select school board meetings, and feeder program meetings.
  • Chain of Command: Understand and use the proper channels for requests, concerns, or grievances.
  • Innovation and Improvement: Stay informed on new innovations in the sport, maintain a practical approach to coaching, and continually seek improvement. Provide motivation to other coaches within the staff.
  • Practice Organization: Organize practice sessions, teach rules, techniques, and fundamentals, and use time, equipment, and personnel wisely.
  • Supervision and Guidance: Provide appropriate supervision and guidance to student staff members, defining and supervising their responsibilities.
  • Leadership and Conduct: Lead by example in areas of conduct and values, teach high moral conduct, respect for individuals, and proper language. Work with the Athletic Director on disciplinary matters.
  • Motivation and Encouragement: Balance positive encouragement with constructive criticism, demonstrating mature enthusiasm.
  • Support for Other Activities: Encourage athletes to participate in other sports and extra-curricular activities, demonstrating support by attending these functions.
  • Pre-season Meetings: Conduct pre-season meetings with team members to review Athletic Department policies and training rules.
  • Academic Attention: Pay constant attention to the student’s academic progress and conduct.
  • Discipline and Awards: Determine team discipline, communicate disciplinary actions with parents, assist athletes in post high school educational selections, establish lettering policy, and identify award winners.

Staff Responsibilities

  • Philosophy and Techniques: Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. Organize conferences, clinics, and staff meetings.
  • Professional Growth: Encourage professional growth within the staff and analyze staff effectiveness.
  • Supervision and Delegation: Delegate specific duties and supervise their implementation.
  • Discipline and Morale: Maintain discipline, address grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation among staff members.
  • Support School Programs: Encourage support of the entire school program, including other athletic teams and academic pursuits.

Administrative Duties

  • Eligibility and Scheduling: Assist the Athletic Director in checking athlete eligibility and developing the schedule.
  • Preparation and Coordination: Help prepare for practices, competitions, and special events. Coordinate with maintenance, custodial staff, and others as needed.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Provide required documentation for physical exams, parental consent, and eligibility. Ensure all athletes have completed necessary forms.
  • Records and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of contests and submit them to the athletic department. Participate in selecting assistant coaches and evaluating officials.
  • Emergency Planning: Develop and implement an emergency plan for the sport and conduct a yearly risk management audit.

Financial and Equipment Responsibilities

  • Budgeting and Accountability: Participate in budgeting, be accountable for all equipment, and handle equipment issuance, storage, and reconditioning.
  • Supervision and Maintenance: Supervise equipment rooms and locker rooms, ensure cleanliness, and maintain facilities.
  • Security and Care: Ensure the security of facilities and equipment, and instill respect for equipment and school property among team members.

Student Responsibilities

  • Awards and Behavior: Submit recommendations for awards, expect exemplary behavior from team members, and select team members based on performance criteria.
  • Injury Prevention and Care: Attend to athletic injuries and work closely with the Athletic Trainer.

Public Relations

  • Media and Communication: Provide information to the news media through the Athletic Director, communicate with athletes and parents, and maintain confidentiality as needed.
  • Community Engagement: Work with sponsors, support groups, and community recreational groups to support the athletic program.
  • Promotion and Attendance: Explore ways to increase event attendance and engage community groups in program development.

Program Development

  • Leadership and Off-Season Programs: Lead the entire program within the community, develop off-season programs, and assist athletes in finding off-season opportunities.
  • Feeder Programs: Establish philosophy, skills, and techniques for feeder programs, and design conferences and clinics for feeder program coaches.

Terms of Employment

  • Duration: Determined by IHSAA authorized contest and practice seasons and scheduling by the Athletic Director.

Evaluation

  • Performance Evaluation: Evaluated annually by the Principal and Athletic Director based on established job goals and responsibilities.
