Competitive Sports Specialist
Description
  • Assist in the oversight and administration of the club sports program, particularly focused on helping new club sports transition into the program.
  • Assist with the oversight and management of boathouse operations for club sports and outdoor recreation.
  • Provide support for the club sports program and on-site supervision at programs, competitions, and contests as assigned or required.
  • Coordinate, supervise, and evaluate daily operations of the intramural sports program, including decisions on student staff training and development, league and tournament scheduling, on-site supervision of competitions and contests, and marketing and promotions of the programs and services.
  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating paraprofessional management and undergraduate students working in various capacities with the intramural and club sports programs. Take primary responsibility for the intramural sports staff.
  • Develop and revise training methods for intramural sports staff to include sports rules, officiating manuals, videos, practice scrimmages, and training clinics.
  • Assist with development and monitoring of reports reflecting intramural sports participation statistics, satisfaction, sportsmanship, injuries, and budget expenditures.
  • Order, inventory, inspect, and maintain program equipment and championship awards for the intramural department and club sports teams.
  • Keep informed of regional and national trends by becoming actively involved in community, regional, and national organizations associated with campus recreation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested by the Associate Director of Campus Recreation.

Requisite Qualifications:

  • Typically a Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Administration, Leisure Management, Physical Education, Sports Administration, College Personnel Services or a related field or equivalent experience. A Master's Degree is preferred. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
  • Minimum two years demonstrated practical experience in an intramural and club sports program. Experience with student staff development and personnel management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of officiating and training team sports officials, league and tournament scheduling, basic risk management practices as they relate to recreational and competitive sports, and developing cooperative working relationships.
  • Experience with and an understanding of supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in a university setting preferred.
  • Familiarity with the purpose and mission of Jesuit higher education and the university's institutional commitment to the Catholic tradition.
  • Knowledge and experience within the following areas preferred: Student work-study programs; the developmental needs of college students and how to support them; activity planning in a university setting; principles of management and staff supervision; public relations; and conflict management/problem solving techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written; copy editing and layout; oral presentations to diverse audiences. Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to serve as a role model for student employees.
  • Demonstrated computer competency and preferably knowledgeable of Microsoft Office and league scheduling software.
