Description

The Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach will provide knowledge, motivation, and leadership to student-athletes, helping them excel in a competitive atmosphere that enhances their total education, including physical well-being, moral character, and social and mental development. Maintaining academic eligibility is a top priority.

The Head Coach is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading a comprehensive interscholastic basketball program, aligning with the objectives of the school's athletic program.

Job Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage all levels of the basketball program.
  • Supervise and evaluate assistant and lower-level coaches.
  • Develop and implement an organizational structure reporting to the Athletic Director.
  • Assist in selecting athletic staff and volunteers.
  • Verify participant registration and eligibility with the athletic secretary.
  • Develop game and practice schedules, facilities use, transportation needs, and program budgets with the Athletic Director.
  • Plan and conduct practice sessions and competition strategies ensuring student health and physical well-being.
  • Coordinate pre-season parent meetings to review eligibility, conduct codes, team rules, injury prevention, and risks.
  • Manage and coordinate practice and competition schedules year-round.
  • Submit equipment, supplies, and uniform requests to the Athletic Director.
  • Maintain responsibility for inventory, selection, and care of equipment.
  • Foster effective communication and cooperation with athletes, administration, staff, students, parents, and the community.
  • Maintain good public relations with media, boosters, parents, officials, players, fans, and local youth programs.
  • Work effectively with student-athletes of varying abilities and backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Model and instill values of sportsmanship and fair play.
  • Monitor students' athletic and academic eligibility; inform about NCAA registration and requirements.
  • Encourage athletes to use NCAA tracking systems and prepare for college.
  • Ensure the safety of students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Plan and implement safe and effective daily practices and events.
  • Apply and enforce discipline in accordance with U-46 Athletic and Student Codes of Conduct.
  • Build and sustain a competitive program supported by staff and the community.
  • Collaborate on fundraising activities and maintain accurate records of funds.
  • Provide game results to media, maintain season statistics, and report to the Athletic Director.
  • Establish positive relationships with local athletics organizations and K-8 sports programs.
  • Attend Freshman Orientation, incoming 8th Grade Night, and related activities.
  • Submit an annual end-of-season program evaluation with improvement recommendations.
  • Engage in personal professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties/events as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Education:

  • Proper certification with the American Sport Education Program and/or Valid Illinois Teaching certificate.
  • Pass IHSA required tests and view videos.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification is required.

Experience / Knowledge:

  • Head Varsity Coaching experience or equivalent professional coaching/player level preferred.
  • Ability to handle and react professionally to stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated positive conduct and adherence to disciplinary guidelines in previous coaching positions.
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theories, strategies, and techniques for high school athletes.
  • Proven record of emphasizing sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes, and character.

Physical Demands:

  • Standing for long periods; may involve walking or standing for extended periods.
  • Perceiving sound, near and far vision, depth perception, oral communication, manual dexterity to operate sports-related equipment, and handling various materials/objects.
  • Work in varied temperatures and weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Lift equipment up to 50 pounds.

Terms of Employment:

  • Determined by IHSA approved athletic calendar and school district policy.
  • Sport Season: Per IHSA Calendar.
  • Student opportunities may be adjusted to environmental restrictions. Positions and stipends will reflect these changes.
  • For ETA coaches: Position can be renewed without reapplying if satisfactory status is maintained.
  • For Non-ETA Coaches: One-year position, must reapply each year.
