Job Title: High School - Head Coach

Classification: Extra Duty/Co-Curricular

Reports To: Building Administration and Athletic Director

Terms of Employment: One Athletic Season – Salary to be determined by Board/District 21 Education Association Contract Agreement.

Job Purpose:
Provide leadership and organization for the assigned athletic program for grades 9-12. Establish an environment where student-athletes can gain self-esteem and develop a positive self-image. Promote sportsmanship, a winning attitude, and commitment to student academic success.

Job Qualifications:

  • Provide leadership to the assigned athletic program, including coaching duties and assigning responsibilities to assistant coaches.
  • 3-5 years of previous head coaching experience in the assigned sport or previous coordinator experience at the 4A level or higher.
  • Previous collegiate coaching experience preferred.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:

  • Exemplify moral character consistent with being a positive role model for high school students.
  • Knowledge of the sport at the high school level, including recent rule changes.
  • Ability to develop a system of play that can be effectively communicated to assistants for implementation in grades 9-12.
  • Effective communication skills with athletes and parents.
  • Working knowledge of multiple offensive and defensive systems in the assigned sport.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others, organize and manage students' time effectively, and consistently use problem-solving strategies.
  • Adaptability to perform practices in various indoor and outdoor locations.

Education Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent. College Degree Preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and Testing Required:
Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance; district drug screening clearance; BBP Training; NFHS Coaches Certification or ASEP Certification; First Aid/CPR Certification.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Direct and supervise organized practice sessions during the regulated season, including setting seasonal goals and objectives.
  • Work cooperatively with parents, other coaches, staff, and support programs.
  • Assist the Athletic Director in maintaining and preparing athletic facilities for competition.
  • Assist the Athletic Director in purchasing equipment, supplies, and uniforms for the sport.
  • Assist the Athletic Director in game scheduling.
  • Conduct pre-season meetings with athletes and parents, outlining schedules, student athletic contracts, and the Student Athletic Handbook.
  • Work to improve the skills and knowledge of each athlete and the team as a whole.
  • Organize team members according to competitive levels.
  • Enforce appropriate team rules and discipline.
  • Follow OSAA or other governing body guidelines and principles of sportsmanship.
  • Adhere to athletic eligibility requirements.
  • Adhere to the District Athletic Handbook, Standard Operating Procedures of the league, and OSAA or other governing body rules.
  • Work harmoniously with TDHS Riverhawks Booster Club, community, volunteers, parents, and school personnel.
  • Communicate effectively (both orally and written) with students, parents, officials, and staff.
  • Submit rosters, equipment, and uniform inventories, and other reports as required.
  • Coordinate end-of-year awards, communications, and events.
  • Monitor expenditures in relation to the budget and ensure proper use, care, and return of uniforms and other assigned equipment.
  • Supervise and/or arrange for the proper supervision of student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and related activities.
  • Coordinate and manage all media communications for grades 9-12 related to the assigned sport.
  • Consult with the Athletic Director and Administration concerning playing conditions, safety concerns, program improvements, player performance, outside complaints, and other related matters.
  • Immediately report any instance of suspected child abuse to Law Enforcement or the Department of Human Services according to ORS 419B.010.
