Description

The Head Varsity Girls Track Coach will provide knowledge, motivation, and leadership in an interscholastic sport, enabling students to excel to their full potential while competing in an environment that contributes to their total education. This includes their physical well-being, moral character, and social and mental development, with academic eligibility being the priority.

The Head Coach is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading a comprehensive interscholastic program and achieving the objectives of the total school athletic program.

Job Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee all levels of the track program.
  • Direct and lead a coaching staff, monitor assignments and duties, and annually evaluate all coaches.
  • Design and implement an organizational structure reporting to the Athletic Director.
  • Assist in selecting athletic staff and volunteers.
  • Verify participant registration and eligibility with the athletic secretary.
  • Develop game schedules, practice schedules, facilities use, transportation needs, and program budgets in collaboration with the Athletic Director.
  • Plan practice sessions and competition strategies to ensure students' health and physical well-being.
  • Conduct pre-season parent meetings to review scholastic eligibility, athletic code of conduct, team rules, injury prevention, and sport risks.
  • Coordinate practice and competition schedules throughout the off-season, summer, and in-season periods.
  • Submit requests for equipment, supplies, and uniforms, and maintain inventory and equipment care.
  • Maintain effective communication and cooperative relationships with athletes, administration, staff, students, parents, and the community.
  • Foster good public relations with media, boosters, parents, officials, players, fans, and local youth programs.
  • Work effectively with athletes of varying abilities and backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Model and instill values of sportsmanship and fair play.
  • Monitor students' athletic and academic eligibility and inform parents and students about NCAA clearinghouse registration and academic requirements.
  • Encourage athletes to sign up for Honest Game (or similar NCAA tracking system) and assist with college preparation.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Plan and implement safe and effective daily practices and events.
  • Enforce student discipline according to U-46 Athletic Code of Conduct and U-46 Student Code of Conduct.
  • Build and sustain a competitive program respected by the high school staff and community.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director on fundraising activities and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Provide game results to the media, keep statistics and records, and submit reports as needed.
  • Establish positive relationships with local athletics organizations and K-8 sports programs.
  • Attend Freshman Orientation, incoming 8th Grade Night, and other related activities.
  • Submit a written annual end-of-season program evaluation with recommendations for improvements.
  • Engage in personal professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Education:

  • Proper certification with the American Sport Education Program and/or Valid Illinois Teaching certificate.
  • Pass IHSA required tests and view videos.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification required.

Experience / Knowledge:

  • Head Varsity Coaching experience or professional coaching/player level equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to handle and react professionally to stressful situations.
  • Positive conduct and adherence to disciplinary guidelines in previous coaching positions.
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques for high school athletes.
  • Proven record of emphasizing sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes, and character.

Physical Demands:

  • Standing for long periods and potentially walking or standing for extended periods.
  • Perceiving sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, manual dexterity for sports-related equipment, and handling various materials/objects.
  • Working in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors, including extreme high temperatures.
  • Ability to lift equipment up to 50 pounds.

Terms of Employment:

  • Determined by IHSA approved athletic calendar and school district policy.
  • Sport season per IHSA calendar.
  • Student opportunities may remain the same, not be offered, or require modification based on environmental restrictions. Positions and stipends will reflect these changes.
  • For ETA coaches: If satisfactory status is maintained, the position can be renewed without reapplying.
  • For Non-ETA Coaches: This is a one-year position, requiring reapplication each year.
