Job Title: Part-Time Referee, Ford Ice Center - Clarksville

Job Responsibilities:

  • Control the pace and maintain order during all hockey games.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of up-to-date USA Hockey rules and regulations.
  • Officiate hockey games or competitions to ensure standards of play are maintained and game rules are observed.
  • Stop play to signal participants or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to regulate play or competition.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding and knowledge of rules, procedures, and interpretations.
  • Impose penalties for infractions when appropriate.
  • Inspect sporting equipment and/or examine participants to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
  • Keep track of game times and elapsed time during game segments, starting or stopping play when necessary.
  • Resolve claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assess necessary penalties, according to regulations.
  • Report to regulating organizations regarding sporting activities, complaints made, and actions taken or needed such as fines or other disciplinary actions.
  • Confer with other sporting officials, coaches, players, and facility managers to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems.
  • Work all hockey games assigned based on provided availability.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor on and off the ice.
  • Other duties as assigned by the manager.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must have a Level 1 USA Hockey officiating certification at minimum; other levels depend on the game level.
  • Knowledge of the hockey community in the Middle Tennessee area.
  • Skating experience required.
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to focus on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Calm and professional manner while interacting with coaches, players, and fans, ensuring the safety and integrity of the game.
  • Skating ability equal to or above the level of the game officiated.
  • Strong skating skills maintained to match the level of players officiated.
  • Background check, including criminal history, driving history, and character references, as a condition of employment.
  • Valid driver’s license, suitable driving history, and insurable by SS&E’s insurance carrier (without conditions).

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent lifting, bending, walking, and handling of heavy equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work on an ice surface.
  • Ability to ice skate.
  • Exposure to bright lights, extreme temperatures, and loud noise.
  • Ability to stand upright for continuous periods.
  • Excellent speaking and listening skills.

Equipment Used:

  • Office equipment, industrial equipment, hockey equipment, ice resurfacing equipment, and scoreboard equipment.
