QUALIFICATIONS:

SUPERVISES:

  • Student participants and assumes a supervisory role over all student participants in the program when such control is needed.

JOB GOAL:

  • Carry out the objectives of the program as outlined by the Activities Director.
  • Instruct student participants in individual and team fundamentals, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instruct students in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to achieve a degree of individual and team success. Also, guide students in moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence.
  • Responsible for all matters pertaining to the organization, administration, and coaching program. Enforce all rules of the Classic Suburban Conference, the Minnesota State High School League, and the National Federation as they pertain to softball.
  • Ensure that a completed and signed parental permission form and physical examination card are in the hands of the coach or Activities Office before an athlete begins practice.
  • Ensure players and coaches understand the training rule policy, and return the forms to the Activities Director promptly.
  • Cooperate with the administration, Activities Director, fellow coaches, and students to promote the best interests of the entire activities program.
  • Work with the Activities Director in the appointment and dismissal of assistant coaches for grades 7 - 12.
  • Schedule meetings to coordinate coaching methods at different levels; assist the Activities Director in assigning duties to all assistant coaches and in determining the success of the lower-level programs.
  • Conform to activities department policy in ordering equipment and supplies for the sport.
  • Ensure all team candidates have had a physical examination and returned the physical examination/parental consent form before the first practice session.
  • Prepare a roster of all team members and have participants fill out the athletic eligibility form from which the master eligibility list will be compiled.
  • Assume responsibility for the conduct of contestants in the sport.
  • Accompany and supervise the team to and from all contests.
  • Plan and supervise all practice sessions (suggested length: not more than two and a half hours).
  • Work with the trainer-equipment manager in selecting reliable student managers and student trainers, assign their duties, and supervise their work.
  • Ensure students are not given keys and access cards to enter buildings when the coach is not present.
  • Handle injuries according to school policies and report all serious injuries immediately to the Activities Director.
  • Attend scheduled school meetings unless excused. During sports season, check with the principal or department chairperson for updates on meetings you were unable to attend.
  • Turn in a complete inventory of all equipment to the Activities Director at the conclusion of the season.
  • Complete and return a Coaches Annual Report form to the Activities Director within two weeks after the last contest.
  • Complete and return a supplemental pay voucher to the Activities Director after all responsibilities have been fulfilled.
  • Fulfill all requirements mandated by State and National agencies.
  • Generate an attitude of good sportsmanship and fair play by adhering to the Minnesota State High School League “Code of Ethics”.
  • Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. Hold clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Train and inform staff, encourage professional growth by promoting clinic attendance.
  • Maintain discipline and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Assist the Activities Director in scheduling requirements for tournaments and special sports/activity events.
  • Assist in preparing to hold scheduled events or practices and adhere to the scheduled facility times.
  • Verify that all students have all forms and obligations cleared through the Activities Office before practicing.
  • Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and facilities.
  • Advise the Activities Director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
  • Prepare and submit year-end reports, including information on participants, letter winners, grade levels, specific honors, records, standings, and recommendations for all levels of participation.
