Sports Information Director
Description

Representative Duties:

  • Information Dissemination: Provide information, including photos, to the campus community, Hall of Fame committee, external communities, SCIAC, NCAA, and media regarding the University's athletic teams. Ensure local, regional, and national agencies receive necessary information.
  • Website Management: Create and manage content for www.CLUsports.com, including releases, previews, recaps, photos/videos, game results, rosters, bios, statistics, and schedules. Collaborate with Web Communications for site improvements.
  • Social Media Management: Generate original content, manage, and monitor all social media outlets used by the department.
  • Event Promotion: Promote upcoming athletic events.
  • Award Nominations: Nominate coaches and student-athletes for athletic and academic awards at various levels.
  • Media Relations: Develop professional relationships with sports reporters and editors to ensure substantial coverage.
  • Publications: Prepare game programs, posters, brochures, and schedule cards for each sport.
  • Video Board Content: Produce content for the video board for football and soccer, including contest title slides and Senior Day slides.
  • Interviews: Conduct interviews with coaches, student-athletes, administrators, and others for publications and to promote the University's 22 NCAA athletics programs.
  • Historical Records: Maintain up-to-date historical documents and statistical archives.
  • Live Streaming Coordination: Provide CLU Media Services with necessary information for live streaming home contests. Coordinate Live Stats and promote other live feeds (video, audio).
  • Event Management: Schedule statistics crews for all home athletic events, supervise the press box, and assist the media with statistics, highlights, and requested information.
  • Supervision: Supervise SID Graduate Assistant, students, and interns; assign and review all work.
  • Budget Management: Manage the SID budget, including student employment funds.
  • Newsletter Management: Manage the publication of a bi-weekly electronic newsletter.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the Director of Athletics, student-athletes, coaches, and administrators to promote Cal Lutheran intercollegiate athletics.
  • Information Exchange: Work with SIDs and coaches of opponent teams to gather and exchange information.
  • Editorial Board Participation: Serve on the Editorial Board of CLU Magazine and as the primary sports writer providing story ideas, copy, and photos.
  • Liaison: Serve as a liaison between Athletics and other campus departments concerning sports information requests.
  • Representation: Represent Cal Lutheran at SCIAC and NCAA Division III meetings.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Of:

  • All 22 NCAA Division III sports in which CLU student-athletes compete.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Required statistical programs (NCAA LiveStats, PrestoStats).
  • Rules/statistics related to both the SCIAC and NCAA.
  • Solid writing and photography techniques with extreme attention to detail.
  • Desktop publishing programs (Adobe Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Contribute, Illustrator, etc.) and social media.
  • Web and electronic filing techniques.
  • Social media content development and management.

Ability To:

  • Use strong oral and written communication skills effectively on deadline.
  • Post and edit web content in the office and remotely.
  • Provide news releases, statistics, records, feature stories, and publications for numerous sports.
  • Understand and incorporate university branding and printing policies.
  • Multitask while working on deadline in a variety of environments.
  • Work with a variety of personalities; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Develop interesting, innovative, and creative materials related to University sports.
  • Function well on both Mac and PC platforms.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and coordinate student-workers/interns to perform functions in the sports information office and at sporting events.
  • Use a digital camera and video recording equipment, including a flip cam device.
  • Meet deadlines consistently and manage time efficiently.
  • Work evenings and weekends with flexibility in determining consistent work hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in sports information with NCAA LiveStats and PrestoStats experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in NCAA Division III sports information.
  • Writing and distributing press releases in the associated press format.

Licenses and Other Requirements:

  • Valid California driver's license.

Physical Abilities:

  • Manual dexterity to enter data into a computer and operate office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, and hear to exchange information and make presentations.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods.
  • Pushing, pulling, or lifting light objects.
  • Bending and reaching to store and retrieve files.
  • Walking across campus, including walking up and down hills.

Working Environment:

  • Includes both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including temperature extremes.
  • Subject to vehicle operation for work purposes.
  • Travel is required.
  • Frequent weekend and evening hours are required.
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
