Varsity Boys Basketball Coach
Description

The Varsity Boys Basketball Coach will prioritize the safety and well-being of all athletes while fostering a competitive and educational environment. The coach is responsible for teaching appropriate basketball skills, maintaining a safe and effective strength and conditioning program, and ensuring that all practices and games are conducted with the highest standards of safety and sportsmanship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach and reinforce appropriate basketball skills and techniques.
  • Maintain a comprehensive strength and conditioning program for athletes, including off-season, pre-season, and in-season training sessions.
  • Identify and address potential environmental hazards that could lead to injury due to weather or field conditions.
  • Provide or delegate emergency care and first aid for athletic injuries in the absence of an athletic trainer or team physician.
  • Notify parents/guardians in the event of an athlete's injury.
  • Conduct pre-season meetings with athletes and parents to discuss program details, including emergency procedures, equipment, techniques, insurance, and injury reporting.
  • Establish and maintain positive communication with the team physician, school athletic trainer, and school administration regarding injury care and prevention.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to all rules and regulations set by the Norfolk School Board, VHSL, Eastern Region Council, Eastern District Council, and the assigned school.
  • Organize and conduct pre-season meetings with athletes and parents to discuss eligibility, VHSL requirements, NCAA eligibility, and letter requirements.
  • Lead pre-season meetings with assistant coaches to establish goals, objectives, and plans for the season.
  • Stress good sportsmanship during team meetings and outline penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • Develop and implement a daily practice schedule.
  • Submit a complete VHSL eligibility list to the school athletic director seven days prior to the first game.
  • Attend professional in-service clinics and/or meetings to enhance coaching skills.
  • Manage, maintain, and collect equipment throughout the sports season, ensuring proper repair and storage after the season concludes.
  • Ensure safety and proper conduct of all squad members during practices and games.
  • Secure all rooms, buildings, and practice/game facilities after use.
  • Provide the school athletic director with inventories, requisitions, and award lists following the season.
  • Collaborate with media, civic organizations, booster clubs, and other groups to promote interscholastic athletics.
  • Direct all interscholastic-related questions, complaints, and comments to the athletic director.
  • Maintain a positive educational environment for athletes.
  • Counsel and support athletes in meeting VHSL and NCAA eligibility requirements.
  • Conduct supervised study sessions and facilitate tutoring for athletes struggling academically.
  • Monitor academic progress and absences of all athletes.
  • Hold current CPR/First Aid and VHSL Coaches Education certifications.
  • Maintain pre-season conditioning within designated times for the sport.
  • Ensure that field conditions are safe and free of hazards, and monitor weather conditions accordingly.
  • Represent the school professionally in both appearance and behavior at all times.
  • Establish and maintain communication with the team physician, certified athletic trainer, and athletic director.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for the sport and coaching responsibilities.
  • Foster positive relationships between the school, parents, and booster clubs by attending parent meetings, awards banquets, and other related activities.

Qualifications:

  • Must hold a current certificate in CPR/First Aid.
  • Must hold a VHSL Coaches Education certificate.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in coaching basketball at the varsity level.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage and inspire athletes to achieve both athletic and academic success.
